Till now 68% tax payers are nil-filers as they declared zero or less income

The FBR - Federal Board of Revenue is wrestling with a significant issue as nil-filers flooded to 68% of total income tax returns in FY 2023-24, with 2.3 million out of 3.4 million filers likely concealing their taxable income.

This leaves just 1.1 million filer who proclaimed income in their tax returns, representing a critical test for the government in tending to tax avoidance.

The ascent in nil returns, frequently submitted for one-time financial transaction or to take advantage from lower tax rates under the ATL - Active Taxpayers List, features holes in tax implementation.
